Cyclocross - You'd be mad to miss this!
I've always been a bit indecisive, and so when someone asks if I want to mountain bike or road bike, I say YES. Why can't we have the pure efficiency of a road bike, but still be able to tackle trails and dirt?? With cyclocross we can. Sure, watch any YouTube video and it will look like the most painful and ridiculous form of riding, that’s because it is. Inappropriate bikes on pseudo-trails, in mud, with features designed to make you get off. But damn its fun too!
And next weekend these nutters will converge on Jardines Park for the inaugural New Zealand National CX Champs. Sure, there'll be some folks there on legitimate CX bikes aiming for the silver fern Lycra. Most will be on home conversion jobs, voiding their warranties by squeezing 700c wheels into 26" frames, finding some drop bars in the back of the shed and leaving their dignity at home for the joy of skinny wheel skids in the mud. And even if you can't bring yourself to enter, there is sure to be some entertaining carnage to watch from the comfort of the club house, just be sure to bring some noise!
Here's a video of the origins of Cross.
Stu Grieg – the fastest man in lycra!
Don’t miss watching Stu compete in the AJ Hackett Cyclocross Champs @ Jardines Park – Saturday 2nd July. A Winterfestival must do!
